WORKSHOP: Front Light Back Light for Stop Motion or Collage Animation

Learn to composite your stop-motion or collage animation!

Beginner and/or Intermediate Animators:

All levels welcome- as a beginner, learning about mattes is a great way to start to break down your ideas technically so you can achieve what you want to do. Intermediate filmmakers may want to bring along ideas of projects they want to complete so we can do a more detailed VFX breakdown.

About the Workshop

Front Light/Back Light is a useful VFX technique used to create a moving matte. With this matte, you can composite your animation or elements onto artwork or video. It works similar to green screen but without the problems of spill around the edges and your character/element can have green in it. This class will demo two Front Light/Back Light set ups- a down shooter tabletop setup and a stage setup with a character. We will also go through the process of importing the footage into After Effects. This is a great technique for shooting in small spaces and also for creating complex collages.

About the Instructor

After earning a BA in Film and Animation at the Rhode Island School of Design, Martha worked for 6 years at the feature film studio Laika in Portland, Oregon. As a freelance artist in Toronto, her unique style has been featured in several award winning short films and commercials shown at Sundance, SXSW and the New York Times.
